Swing trading captures medium-term price movements over days to weeks — offering a balance between the precision of day trading and the patience of position trading. It suits traders who can analyse charts once or twice daily without needing to monitor positions in real time, making it the most popular style among working professionals.

Core Swing Trading Concepts

Successful swing trading is built on understanding market structure. Price does not move in straight lines — it moves in waves of impulse and correction. Swing traders identify where a correction is ending and position for the next impulse wave in the dominant trend direction.

Impulse moves
Strong directional candles with expanding volume — the trend engine
Corrective moves
Shallow pullbacks against the trend — the entry opportunity
Higher highs / higher lows
Bullish market structure — only take long swings
Lower highs / lower lows
Bearish market structure — only take short swings

Three High-Probability Swing Setups

01
Pullback to Trend Support (Most Reliable)
In a confirmed uptrend (higher highs/lows on D1), wait for price to pull back to a key support level — a previous swing high, the 21 EMA, or a Fibonacci 38.2–61.8% retracement. Enter on the first H4 bullish rejection candle (pin bar or engulfing). Stop below the swing low. Target the previous swing high for 2–3R.
02
Breakout and Retest
Price consolidates below resistance, then breaks above it on strong momentum. Wait for the retest of the broken resistance (now support) before entering. This avoids chasing breakouts and provides a precise stop placement just below the retest level. Target measured by the height of the prior consolidation projected upward.
03
Key Level Reversal (Counter-Trend)
Higher risk — only for experienced traders. Price reaches a major D1 support or resistance level with a strong reversal candlestick pattern (pin bar, evening/morning star). Confirm with RSI divergence on H4. Tight stop just beyond the level. Target the nearest opposite swing. Maximum 0.5% risk on counter-trend trades.

Managing Open Swing Trades

  • Set initial stop-loss at entry — never move it wider after entering
  • Move stop to breakeven once trade moves 1R (one risk unit) in your favour
  • Take partial profit (50%) at 2R — protect gains, let remainder run
  • Trail the stop on the remaining position using the last H4 swing low (long) or high (short)
  • Do not check the position every hour — swing trading requires trusting your analysis; review once at the London open and once at the NY open
"A 2-lot swing trade on GBP/JPY that runs for 5 days earns $16–$24 in cashback — the equivalent of recovering 1.5–2 pips of the spread cost purely from the rebate programme."
